Napier-Gisborne Railway
Sir, —The reported expressions of opinion by the new Minister of Public Works read workmanlike—"better to wear out than rust out” —and apply to roads as well as men. Has the finished section north of Napier (not used) been missed' by the would-be users. Will our new executive face this question: Would the work already done, including the tunnels, give, better service to the residents and producers as a roadway rather than as a railway?
Railways need roads to feed them. Today’s practice is to ignore the railway and send goods the whole distance by motor truck. Would that apply to Napier and Gisborne?
Our engineers are now forming good roads, with good surfaces, an adaptable means of access, with a degree of success not possible to the best railroad. Are we as a little nation plucky enough to face the facts and act? There is some reason to believe that our new executive has the insight and daring to lead, on ascertaining the facts bearing on the question of what is the best road along the East Coast. —I am, etc., EAST COASTER.
