TROUBLE IN FRUIT SHOP
Lettuce Poked in Owner’s Face
Lbttuces and tomatoes were the cause of trouble in a Chinese fruiterer’s shop on Friday night, and as a result Edward Leahey, bushman, aged 33, and Harold Beggs, labourer aud seaman, aged 32, appeared in the Wellington Magistrate’s Court on Saturday, (he former charged with assaulting Willie Wong and the latter with assaulting Wong Wai. They were fined £2 each, in default 14 days’ imprisonment, by Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M.
Sub-inspector C. E. Roach said that about 6.30 p.m. on Friday, accused went to a Chinese fruiterer’s shop, where it was alleged they began to eat lettuces. They were under the influence of liquor. One wanted to buy tomatoes on credit, and they began to eat them, too. When the proprietor ordered them out of the shop, they poked a lettuce in his face, and two other Chinese who came to assist the proprietor received the same treatment.
Leahy told the magistrate he had nothing to say; but Beggs said Leahy had produced a shilling and had not asked for credit. “Chinamen flew from all directions, and we had to show fight to protect ourselves,” said Beggs. He added that he had been injured on the side of the face and on the shin.
