PROVINCIAL TENNIS

Martinborough Tourney Dominion Special Service. Martinborougli, December 28. Excellent progress was made in the Martinborough Lawn Tennis Club's annual tournament to-day, the seiui-linals being reached in several championship events. The courts showed signs. of breaking up only toward the end of the day. The men’s single between I’. Hawksworth and S. G. Wyatt, both ol Masterton, was full of excitement. Wyatt s backhand was almost without fault, but Uawksworth’s let him down. ’Phis was particularly noticeable in the match with Dobson, of Greytown, in which Hawksworth took everything possible on his forehand, sometimes running three or four yards to get round a ball played to his backhand. Another excellent game was lhe women’s championship single between Miss Pam Betts and Miss M. Young, the former winning G-l, 6-1. Miss Young was really the more brilliant player, but Miss Betts was indefatigable, and her steady stream of well-placed returns slowly worn her opponent down. Both players were driving well, while their backhand play was very good, each returning many very difficult’shots. Miss Betts thoroughly deserved her win, although the score was really no indication of actual minor difference between the two players. Partnered by her young sister, Miss ' • Betts had another success in the women s championship doubles, defeating Misses B. Baird and M. Pearce, 3-6. 6—, 6--. This match was easily one of the longest of the tourney, lasting almost two hours. The pairs were very evenly matched, and everv point was keenly fought. Miss Jocelyn Betts played very well throughout the match. If the weather holds the tournament will be concluded on Monday: Results: — Men’s Singles. Second round: J.
