A. formidable array of aliases ranging from titles hinting at an intimate association with the peerage to styles which, although slightly less patrician, still held a fine, high-sounding tone, followed the name of a defendant who appeared in the Dunedin Magistrate s Court. The man, it appeared, had been christened Adrian Cyrus Somerset, but in the course of his travels through the Dominion he had successively become Adrian Rodney, the Honourable Adrian Rodney, Lord Rodney, Alfred Leon Lowther, Viscount Lowther, and Cyrus Adrian Lowther. Had the list of charges against him been commensurate with that of his aliases, he would probably have gone to jail for the rest of his life. As it was, he was fined 10/for drunkenness, with an alternative of 24 hours’ imprisonment.
