SPECTACULAR FIRE

Slopes of Table Mountain PLANTATIONS DESTROYED Cape Town, December 26. The magnificent but awesome spectacle of Table Mountain fiercely ablaze confronted people emerging from the churches on Christmas morning. The blaze began on the city side of the slopes and swept up the peak, from which dislodged boulders were rattled into the valley. Seven hundred people were lighting the flames, which swept down the northern side and at one time threatened the Prime Minister’s official residence. It was saved by a fortuitous change of wind. Already pine belts worth £250,000 have been destroyed, the Hames from which were 200 feet high. BLIND FACTORY BURNED Brisbane, December 27. Fire, which was fanned by a strong wind, destroyed the Venetian blind factory of John Thurlow and Sons, Lim ited, at Albion, causing damage estimated at £15,000. Nearby houses were also damaged, one being practically destroyed.
