MAJESTIC THEATRE

“Broadway Melody of 1936” One of the most ambitious musical extravaganzas yet screened, “Broadway Melody of 1936,” which outdoes all its predecessors in the “Broadway Alelody ’ series, began the second week of its successful season at the Alajestic Theatre last evening. There is comedy in plenty, and tho story takes dramatic turns which, set it above the usual vehicle of its type. The plot is all interwoven with the spectacular specialities, and the many song hits all fall naturally out of the streaming action of the production. Eleanor Powell, who is starred as the girl who has great ambitions but only realises them after a hard struggle, is without doubt a marvellous tap-dancer, and she handles the ballerina demands finely, as well as proving herself a fine dramatic actress. Robert Taylor has a grand, romantic male lead, and Jack Benny, the popular radio star, handles a vigorous, entertaining role perfectly. As the “king of stooges” Sid Silvers gets many a laugh with his droll humour an<j merry clowning, and June Knight takes the part of a spoiled darling of New York society. Other players 6? unquestionable quality taking part are that clever brother and sister, Vilma and Buddy Ebsen, famous as comedians and dancers, Nick Long, acrobat, Frances Langford, Harry Stockwell, and a great manv more. The choruses and dance ensembles are most elaborate and luxurious, and the frocking is delightful. In one scene in silver and white, the ensemble is played about a tree composed of drooping pearls like dewdrops, and a large mirror, lake-like in the foreground, reflects the beauty of the dances and gowns. “China Seas.” Unusual entertainment is promised in “China Seas,” which is to be screened at the Alajestic Theatre shortly. An interesting trio of stars, Clark Gable, Jean Harlow and AVallace Beery, heads the cast, with several other prominent names in support.
