NORTH ISLAND TITLES
Tournament at Wanganui SECOND DAY'S RESULTS Dominion Special Service. Wanganui, December 26. Good progress was made with matches in the second day of the tenth annual North Island tennis championships. The weather remained fine, and playing conditions were excellent. The chief defeat of the day was H. T. Cox aud L. AV. Udy’s (AVanganui) victory over N. Bedford (AVellington) and R. blcFarlane (AVanganui >. Although nothing spectacular was offered, rallies were sharp aud decisive, mostly ending in favour of the local pair. It was Bedford’s and AlcFarlane’s first game together, which probably accounted for the lack, of combination and their complete crack-up in the third set. N. G. Sturt and M. L. Lampe, the only seeded players in the men’s doubles, encountered little opposition, aud it appears the final will be fought to-morrow between them and Cox and Udy, who are the local champions. , , „ Sturt (Auckland), J. J. blcCarthy. N. Bedford (AVellington), L. AV. Udy (Wanvanui), C. 11. Strombom (New Plymouth), E. Dickie (AVaverley), and A. I. Robertson (Palmerston North) are the seeded players in the men’s championship singles, and with the execution o£ McCarthy and Dickie, who were displaced iu the second round, all remain in play. Miss J. E. Ramsay (Auckland), blisses Beverley (Matamata), and blrs. C. Smith (Wanganui) are seeded in the women s championship singles, and all except Mrs. Smith, defeated by bliss T. Greaves (AAanganui) in the second round, appear in the semi-finals, blisses Mary and Margaret Purcell (Wanganui) ran Misses N. and M. Beverley close to defeat in the women’s championship doubles, the game being so far the best in the round. The match produced a variety of strokes and styles, blargaret Purcell’s aggressiveness and passing shots found the Misses Beverley in difficulties. Her sister’s craft and' heavily sliced placements were hard to return, but the blisses Beverleys’ possession of the knack of producing winning shots won them the game, in which there were many lor.g interesting rallies. TI. Bedford, bliss Ramsay, 11. J. Sturt, Miss N. Beverley, C. 11. Strombom, Miss P. AVylds. llay-Campbell. bliss M. Purcell, L. AV. Udy, Mrs. C. Smith, D. I.
