YORKSHIRE SOCIETY

Christmas Entertainment Under the chairmanship of the president, Mr. Karl Atkinson, a large gathering of members of the Yorkshire Society enjoyed a programme of Christmas entertainment (including supper with spice cake and cheese) at the Dominion Farmers’ Institute this week. In his introductory address the president referred briefly to the recently-ap-pointed Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster (Mgr. Hinsley), son of a village carpenter born at Carlton, near Selby, Yorkshire, and also to the death of the late Sir William Watson, Yorkshire's great poet. Two of the members of the visiting M.C.C. team were Yorkshiremen. The death of Winifred Holtby had removed a celebrated Yorkshire novelist. As Yorkshiremen they had felicitated the prel sident of the society in London, Sir Phillip Cunliffe-Lister, upon his elevation to the peerage as Viscount Swinton. Mr. C. Williams sang tenor solos. Miss Molly Atkinson, mezzo-soprano, Mr. S. Rogers, baritone, and the veteran, Mr. T. H. Coltman. bass, also sang. The musicians were Mr. W. Haydock, violin, and Mr. Frank Crowther, piano. Mr. J. Hemingway read dialect poems by Dorothy Una Ratcliffe (Mrs. McGrigor Phillips), and told humorous stories. The president announced that the members of the society had already formed a fund by voluntary subscriptions for bringing cheer to the needy this Christmas, and a loving cup was circulated for such contributions as those present wished to add. He later announced that as a result the sum of £5/5/- would be expended on supplies to be given to the Fielden Taylor Mission.
