Decrease in British Imports

HEAVY DECLINE IN CHEESE Imports of dairy produce into the United Kingdom during the 11 months ended November 30, according to the reports received by the Dairy Board, show a decrease of 9600 tons of butter and 13,500 tons of cheese, compared with those for the corresponding period of last year, as is shown in the following table:

It will be seen that imports of butter from Empire sources show an increase of 4597 tons, while those from foreign countries declined by 14,237 tons. Supplies from New Zealand were lower by 5818 tons, hut imports from Australia increased by 2000 tons, from the Irish Free State by 900 odd tons, and from “other British countries” by 7400 tons. Imports from Denmark fell off by 15,435 tons, from Finland by 1700 tons, from Sweden by 5000 tons, and from the Argentine Kepublic by 1900 tons. Supplies from the Netherlands increased- by 6800 tons. The position of cheese imports for the 11 months is shown as follows: — Cheese.

Grand total .. 124,932 138,470 139,183 Imports of cheese from New Zealand declined by 16,354 tons, and from Canada by 2413 tons. On the other hand. Australian supplies increased by 1094 tons and those from other British countries by 805 tons, thus making the net decrease of Empire supplies 16,808. Imports of cheese from foreign countries increased by 3270 tons, the Netherlands showing an increase of 3462 tons and Italy a decrease of 600 tons. It will be seen that New Zealand supplied over 64 per cent, of Britain’s total imports of cheese during the last eleven months.
