Wesley Ladies’ Guild

A very pleasant and profitable time was spent recently when the Wesley Ladies’ Guild held their final meeting for the year, the occasion taking the form of a social afternoon. Music, songs and competitions were- greatly appreciated, and a very pleasing feature was the allocating ot £ll for Christmas cheer to various worthy causes. These included Wesley, Webb Street and Aro Street Sunday Schools, the Masterton Orphanage, and others. Afternoon tea brought a very enjoyable meeting to a close.

Hutt Valley W.D.F.U.

Happy little children, a jovial Father Christmas, a gaily decorated Christmas tree mounted on the stage, and tables in the foreground laden with home-made dainties, all combined to make a very pleasing scene when the Hutt Valley Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union held their annual children’s party recently. After a substantial meal had been disposed of the children were supplied with ice creams, squeakers, balloons, handkerchiefs, dolls and other gifts from the Christmas tree. Great credit for the very successful effort is due to the energetic committee . which included the following: Mesdames G. Benge, Palmer, Murnhy, H. Scholes, Burrell, Morris, Gorrie and others.

NGA TAWA PERFORMANCE

On Thursday last, the girls of the Wellington Diocesan School, for the third year in succession, gave a very enjoyable performance of one of the Gilbert and Sullivan operas. All who had so much enjoyed the previous performances of “lolanthe” and “H.M.S. Pinafore,” had been looking forward with pleasant anticipation to “The Gondoliers,” and their hopes were fully justified. The curtain rose upon what Is one of the prettiest scenes in all the operas. The effective scenery, tlie bright and dainty dresses of the Venetian maidens, and their bunches of red and white roses, all combined to -make a very charming and colourful picture. This standard of excellence was wellmaintained throughout the whole performance in costume, singing and acting. All the principals’ parts were very ably taken, and they and the chorus once more proved how attractive is the succession of humorous situations and ever-popular songs which go to make up a Gilbert and Sullivan opera. One song in particular, “Take a Pair of Sparkling Eyes,” was received with enthusiasm and a well-merited encore.

At the close of the performance many lovely bouquets and handsome boxes of chocolates were handed over the footlights. Miss Salmon, the producer of this and the previous operas, received an armful of flowers and some very hearty applause. The school hall was completely filled by a Targe aud appreciative audience, which included Miss Mitchell (headmistress). Bishop Sprott, trustees and parents, and many friends of the school from Martoil and the neighbourhood.
