Youth Who Murdered , Old Man

(Received December 16, 9.5 p.m.) Sydney, December 16. John Hickey, 17 years of age, a dairy hand, was found guilty in the Criminal Court to-day of murdering Montague Henwood and was sentenced to death. Ht s defence was that Henwood attempted to assault him and during a struggle in a railway carriage Hickey killed Henwood with a water bottle, rifled his pockets and threw the body cut of the train. The Judge said it was quite apparent that the jury rejected the vile excuse Hickey made for his terrible act. Mr. Benwood was a State Conciliation Commissioner, aged 65, and his body was found alongside the railway line near Faulconbridge, 51 miles west of Sydney, on November 4. One side of Mr. Henwood’s head was shockingly injured. Hie vest pockets were turned inside out. His gold watch and chain were untouched, but his hat and baggage were missing. Bloodstains were discovered in the carriage he occupied. There was also evidence that he was dragged 20 yards alongside the railway track.
