CHRISTMAS BONUS
First of Two Instalments
PAYMENT TO UNEMPLOYED
A start was made at the Buckle Street labour bureau yesterday with • the payment of the Christmas bonus to the unemployed of Wellington. Payouts were made to single men on sustenance, who at the same time drew their regular weekly payments up to January 4.
Single men who drew pay yesterday received £2/2/-, being the aggregate of 14/- a week (sustenance rates) up to January 4. They received also the sum of 17/- each, this representing the first payment of the Christmas bonus. The remainder of the bonus will be paid to these men early in January, probably on January 3or 4. In addition to the usual payment they will then each receive 25/6, making a total bonus payment of £2/2/6, or two and a half weeks at the work relief rate of 17/- a week, which has been granted to sustenance men.
The pay-outs are to continue all this week, and up to Christmas Eve.
