STRONGLY CRITICISED
Auckland ‘ Tramwaymen’s Summer Jackets By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, December 16. Strong criticism was expressed by members of the Transport Board this morning regarding the light summer lumber jackets supplied for the first time yesterday to conductors and motormen in the Auckland tram service. “When I first saw them I thought, ‘Are our trams being run by a board of navvies?”’ said Mr. J. Sayegh. “They are terribly cheap-looking things—like discarded old blouses that had been used by women about the house. The best tiling we can do is to eall them in and get an entirely new outfit.” The chairman, the Hon. H. G. R. Mason, explained that the tunics were adopted, after consultation with representatives of the conductors and motormen, because they were a standard design for tramwaymen in tropical countries. Mr. E. J. Phelan said: They’re a disgrace and ought to be called in at once. Mr. F. E. Lark asked that a report should be furnished by the manager, Mr. A. E. Ford, with an estimate of the cost of another outfit. The matter was left over in the meantime. z
