SWIMMING
Amateurs and Advertising WELLINGTON CENTRE A meeting of the Wellington Amateur Swimming Centre, was held last night, Mr. N. McCartney presiding. Authority was granted to the hon. secretary of the Wellington Swimming Association, Mr. N. N. Oldershaw, to. wear the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association’s honorary blazer. This is in recognition of Mr. Oldcrshaw’s services to amateur swimming extending over a number of years. The New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association forwarded the following ruling by the council on the question of pictures of swimmers in advertisements. “Any swimmer,” says the ruling, “who, for a consideration of any kind, permits his photograph to be used for advertising purposes forfeits his amateur status. The acceptance of goods is equivalent to the acceptance of cash.” It was also stated by the association that “the council is aware that for some time past it has been the practice of one firm of manufacturers to present a costume to a swimmer who breaks a record. This does not constitute a breach by the swimmer of his amateur statue, but the position is one that centres are advised to watch carefully to ensure that abuses do not creep in.” The following dives have been declared compulsory, for the New Zealand championships. They are all high board dives and 'are the dives for the next Olympic Games. There are no compulsory dives from the low board. Men: No. 3A, somersault forward, running; No. 9, pike dive backward, standing; No. 13A, Isander running; No. 188, backward spring, one somersault standing. T Women (all from 10ft. board) : No. oA, somersault forward, running; No. 9, pike dive backward, standing; No. 13A, Isander running. Intermediate boys: The same as for women.
The voluntary dives may be performed from another board. It was decided to forward a letter of congratulation to the Hon. W. Nash on his elevation to Cabinet rank. Tributes were paid to the great interest Mr. Nash had taken in the sport of swimming, particularly in the Hutt Valley. Mr. N. McCartney said he hoped" that the Government would see its way to make a grant for the help of swimming in New Zealand. At present associations were dependent, ou affiliation fees to keep going.
