MYSTERY PARCEL DAY

Raising Funds For Smith Family

Although the Prime Minister has Intimated that the Government will be caring for all registered unemployed at Christmas time, it is evident that this relief will reach only the officially known and registered unemployed, states an official of the Smith Family iu Wellington. There will, however, still be many people in need of assistance, the sick and aged, the widow and the fatherless, and those unable to work owing to physical disability, oldage pensioners, and still more tragic, and so often unremembered, deserted wives. All these people have a claim on the generosity of tehir fellow citizens, and the. Smith Family Is making an appeal on their behalf. For several years now members of the family have visited the homes of the recipients and have personal knowedge of the need that exists for an organised effort in order to bring some pleasure into these homes, to people who otherwise have nothing to remind them of the Christmas season. While realising that the citizens of Wellington have been very generous during the year, the Smith Family is confident that they will not fail to respond to the claims of this very deserving section of the community. With a view to augmenting ite funds for this object the Smith Family will hold a mystery parcel day to-day, when 10,000 parcels ranging in value from one shilling to £l2/17/6 will be on sale in various depots in the city. On Sunday evening, December 22, in St. James Theatre, the New Zealand Grand Opera Society will give a complete stage presentation of Mascagni’s grand opera “Cavallerla Rusticana,” and it is confidently anticipated that the theatre will be packed to overflowing for this final Smith Family effort of the year.

The public cun rest assured that each and every case dealt with by the family is thoroughly investigated and that the family has the guidance and help of social workers of years of standing in the city. Each can rest assured that his bounty given through the family will reach men, women and children who will deeply appreciate the help given.
