Injured by Fall of Gravel Dominion Special Service. Wanganui, December-13. When working in a metal pit at Abcrfeldie yesterday, James McKenna, a Public Works employee, received injuries to Free Ambulance conveyed him to the Wanganui Public Hospital, and his condition is reported as satisfactory, though he will not be able to resume work for some time. Large Wool Consignments. Heavy freight trains laden with bales of wool from all districts centred on "Wanganui have been arriving each day of the week, and by the returns which are now available it is revealed that between December 5-11 6105 bales of wool were sent to Wanganui. At a very busy period last Monday morning more than 600 bales were waiting to be unloaded. With the peak of the rush at band, it is likely that a record will be established, as hundreds of bales daily are arriving at the station from Taranaki, Marton and Main Trunk areas. It is expected that the catalogue of 30.000 bales which will be submitted at the Wanganui wool sale in January will easily be filled. Cargoes for Wanganui.

The coastal steamer Storm is expected to arrive at Wanganui from Picton tonight with a large quantity of general cargo from southern ports for local discharge. She will sail later for Wellington and the Bluff. Yesterday the Kapiti brought a cargo of wheat from Lyttelton, and before sailing for Wellington she will load dairy produce at Castlecliff. Further cargoes from southern ports are expected by the s.s. Holmdale, due at Wanganui on Sunday, and the m.v. Breeze, next Tuesday. Road Reports for Holidays.

The Automobile Association (Wanganui), Inc., is issuing complete reports on all highways for the convenience of its members who desire to tour during the Christmas. New Year and general holiday period. This information will be posted on Monday, and should prove most useful and guiding. As usual at this time of the year, there is a big increase in car traffic on the roads, mostly holiday tourists and campers, and much reliance is placed upon automobile associations to suggest suitable road tours. The local association has had many inquiries from its members, and indications point that an even greater number of holiday-makers than last year will be on the road these holidays. HAWKE’S BAY NOTES Maori Cyclists Injured Napier, December 13. Two Maoris, Harry Semniens and Ted Blake, were admitted to the Napier Hospital last night suffering from head injuries sustained through falling from a motor-cycle which skidded in loose metal on the road near Waiohiki. The injured men were discovered by a passing motorist, who secured the services of Dr. Will, of Taradale, who attended to their injuries before sending them to the hospital. Presbyterian Anniversary. The seventieth anniversary of the foundation of the Presbytery of Hawke's Bay was celebrated at St, Paul’s Church, Napier, last evening, when an impressive thanksgiving service was conducted. There were present at the service the Rt. Rev. H. H. Barton, M.A., Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand; Rev. J. A. Asher, 8.A., who recently retired after a long period of service as minister of St. Paul’s Church; the Dean of Waiapu, Very Rev. J. B. Broklehurst, who represented the Church of England; and a number of members of Hawke’s Bay Presbytery. Apologies for absence were received from the Bishop of Waiapu and Rev. 11. J. Odell. The Rev. W. K. Hutchinson, of Waipukurau, conducted tile service, leading a large congregation in prayer. An inspiring address "'as delivered by Rt. Rev. 11. H. Barton, who extended heartiest congratulations to the presbytery of Hawke’s Bay on the attainment of 70 years of service. The presbytery, he said, was among the most important in the Dominion, while during its existence it had contributed several of the most prominent church leaders. The moderator also extended congratulations to the people on their magnificent recovery from the earthquake disaster. At the conclusion of the service a pleasant social gathering took place in the hall to give the congregation an opportunity of meeting and welcoming the moderator and visiting clergy. CALF-REARING TESTS Manakau School’s Success Levin, December 13. There was a large attendance of spectators and competitors at Levin for the final judging in the sixth annual calf-rear-ing competition, held under the auspices of the Horowhenua Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural Club. In the morning the exhibitors took part in the judging of a cow as a separate competition. The afternoon was reserved for the different championship adjudications, which were performed by Mr. H. J. Lancaster, of Glen OrOua. They comprised the best school group (for the club's shield and ribbons) : the best calf on the basis of care and attention (championship ribbon, Mr. K. Shaw’s challenge cup and miniature thereof), second and third places tor club trophies; best dairy type calf, also second and third places for the club's trophies: best. Shorthorn calf (Shorthorn Breeders’ cup) ; and calf-judging trophies. The Manakau’s School’s group proved to .be the winners of this contest, defeating Ohan. Koputaroa was the winner of last year's competition, and occupied third place this year. Further honours went to Manakau. as the best type calf was that exhibited by Patty Robinson, and she also annexed the championship for individual calf. The best Shorthorn calf was shown by Muriel Munfor.d. of Shannon In the judging competition, the subject being a dairy cow to be judged on points. Robert Simpson (L.D.H.S.) won the first prize.
