CAMP TO BE CLOSED
Single Men at Maori Gully ITEMS FROM NAPIER | Dominion Special Service. Napier, December 9. The single men’s camp at Maori Gully, on tbe Napier-Taupo road, is to be closed down before Christmas, according to a decision by the Hawke’s Bay County Council. In moving that the camp be closed, Mr. F. B. Logan, chairman of lhe council, stated that tbe cost of the camp to tbe council was- £l2OO a year. Tile Main Highways Board was favourably considering tlie suggested scheme for the comprehensive widening of tbe Taupo road, of which the continuance of the camp was no part. It was hoped to obtain a subsidy of live to one on the new work. Mr. Logan added that .several works were desired, and it might be necessary for councillors to consider raising the rate. He personally was not in favour of conducting lhe council’s business on a permanent overdraft. ''We are £28.000 in debt at the present lime, and I am definitely, opposed to further construction work being approved at this I eriod. “With a new Government in power its attitude toward subsidies for local bodies is not known, and I feel that the council should conserve its finances, as much us possible,” said Mr. j Logan, when a suggestion that an extra mile of tar-sealing .at Eskdale should be carried out was made by Cr. Tucker.
