ISLAND IN ERUPTION
Lava Pouring Into Sea INHABITANTS LEAVE VILLAGE By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Suva, December 7. Niuafou Island erupted at 12.50 o’clock this morning, and lava is pouring into the sea over the 1929 lava field. The inhabitants of one village have left as a precautionary measure. Otherwise all is safe. The following further report was received by the General Post Office at 8.30 p.m. on Saturday from the superintendent of the radio station at Nukualofa :— “Preceded by some 20 earthquake shocks and accompanied by lightning, thunder and rain, the craters of Ahofakatua and Hina at Niuafou broke out at 12.50 a.m. to-day and the eruption appeared to be extending* toward Futu and Betani. The inhabitants of Betani have left the village. So far six craters have formed and the lava has reached the sea. . Some plantations fringing the old lava field have been destroyed. Great black smoke clouds cover the south side of the island. There has been no loss of life and no immediate danger is anticipated. The eruption is said to be bigger than that of 1929. A line of craters extends for two miles with lava thrown about 70 feet high.
