Task Ahead of Labour Government BETTER TIMES PREDICTED By Telegraph—-Press Association. Christcliurdi, December 8. Nearly 2500 supporters of the. Labour Party in Christchurch to-day attended an open-air meeting iu the city to celebrate the party's victory at the polls. The speakers included all the Labour members in Christchurch as well as Mr Morgan Williams, the new member for Kaiapoi. and two Ministers, the Hom H. T. Armstrong (Employment) and the Hon. D. G. Sullivan (Industries and Commerce). Most of the speeches were devoted to thanking the people of the city for their generous support and to appealing for further co-operation, the policy of the new Government being treated for the most part In general terms only. . Several speakers referred to fair weather friends” which they said the party had made since its victory, and said that these same friends might not be so friendly in 12 months’ time, when Labour had begun to put its policy into operation. The party, it was stated, would have many battles to fight, but it was certain that their efforts would result in better times for. all sections of the community. Reference was made to the newspaper opposition which the party had to light before the election, ami itj was stated that although the newspapers since the election had become friendly toward the party they would later renew their opposition when Labour pul its policy into operation. Mr. R. M. MacFarlane, a prominent Labour man in the city, said that it was more than possible a Labour daily newspaper would be started in New Zealand, but it was not yet certain which centre would be chosen if one was to be started. Tributes were paid at the rally to the work of former members of the Labour Party now dead, particularly Mr. 11. E. Holland, whose work bad done much to bring about the present victory.
