STUDENT BALLOT
Over 300 Votes Cast at Victoria College CHRISTCHURCH OPINION The student ballot, “Peace or War?” is in full swing at Victoria University College, Wellington, and.up to the end of last week 320 ballots had been cast. This is considered to bo a good start to the campaign to secure as representative a return as possible of student opinion. No reports of the progress of tlie ballot in other centres has as yet been received by the New Zealand University Students’ Association in Wellington. A Christchurch paper states, however, that opinion on tlie ballot at Canterbury University College is divided, and the students’ association, according to the president, Mr. G. M, Tiffen, is not prepared to recognise any result as representative of the college unless a majority of the students record their views. A minority decision would not be accepted. Strong opposition to the questionnaire was expressed in the Canterbury College weekly, “Canta,” an editorial article asking who had prepared the questions and contending that it certainly was not the New Zealand Students’ Association. In addition, the writer condemned the questions as peace propaganda. On this aspect Mr. Tiffen said that the students’ association’s view was not as extreme as that set out in “Canta.” Invited by "The Dominion” yesterday to comment on the statement In "Canta,” Mr. A. T. S. McGhie, secretary of the New Zealand University Students’ Association, said that the ballot had been issued by the association.
