Opens at Lower Hutt To-day

The official opening of' the Hutt 1 alley industrial exhibition is to take place thw evening at 7.45 o clock, the lion, J. Cobbe, Minuter of Justice, officiating. Other speakers will be Mr. Walter Nash, Ml’ Mr. J. AV. Andrews, Mayor of Lower'Hutt, mid Mr. P. N. Player, president of the Lower Hutt Chamber ot Commerce. . ~ . Scenes of activity were m evidence in King George Theatre, Lower Hutt, yesterday when stallholders were busy erecting their stalk All the avialable space has been taken, and the indications are that the exhibition will be an outstanding success. The exhibition is the first venture of the kind-to be attempted in the district, and the enthusiastic response made by manufacturers and other commercial interests suggests it may become an annual fixture. The idea originated with the Lower Hutt Chamber of Commerce, a subsidiary of which—the Hutt Valley Exhibition Society Ltd.—is organising and controlling the function. In addition to a wide range of industrial exhibita, several special features . will be introduced. These include exhibitions ot work done by pupils of the Petone Memorial Technical College. A programme ot attractive items has been arranged for each afternoon and evening. These will include cooking demonstrations, mannequin parades, dancing exhibitions, instruction in physical culture, and orchestral items. , T _ Concerning the exhibition, the Hou. K. Masters, Minister of Industries and Commerce. says:— “I have watched with interest the project sponsored by the Lower Hutt Cham; bar of Commerce to hold an industrial exhibition in the interests of business enterprise in the Hutt Valley. I understand that the project has been received by the industrial and commercial units in that area with so much enthusiasm that it has been decided probably to make the exhibition an annual affair. “The Hutt Valley lias long been the centre of the manufacturing industries in the Wellington district, and year by year the range of such industries has steadily and rapidly increased. The exhibition which is shortly to be held will give not only the Hutt Valley residents but also residents of Wellington and its suburbs the opportunity of studying the progress that has been achieved. "I regard this exhibition as a practical gesture to exemplify not only that the variety of products manufactured or produced" within the Dominion is being extended your by year, lint also , that their quality is being continually set to a higher standard. Moreover, I regard the progress which has been made in industry generally in the Hutt Valley district ns symbolical of the progress that has been made throughout the Dominion. By efforts such as this the general public has the opportunity of comparing New Zea-land-made goods with similar imported ones both on a quality and price basis, and thanks to the enterprise au'd energy of New Zealand manufacturers, products made within the confines of the Dominion generally speaking do compare very favourably with imported lines. By efforts such as this, ujierein direct appeal is made to the individual buyer to give first preference to the products of his own country, a national policy for the benefit of all is promulgated. “I congratulate the organisers of the exhibition upon their initiative in holding this exhibition, and wish their efforts every success.”
