ESPLANADE HOTEL
Old Place Coming Down
A very old Hutt Road landmark, the building that used to be the Esplanade Hotel, where Tinakori Road joius Tliorndou Quay and the Hutt Road, is now being demolished, together with some adjoining buildings which, like the hotel, have become too old and dilapidated to be worth maintaining. Tbe property is owned by J. Staples and Company, Ltd., who state that there is no building project for the site. The hotel, which was named after the waterfront promenade that used to be nearby, lost its license when Wellington suburbs electorate went dry in 190 S and latterly had been a boardinghouse. Before 1889 the building was tbe Junction Brewery. At that time the Junction Brewery amalgamated with Staples’s brewery aud was closed down and converted into an hotel. The brewing tower remained ou top of the building until a few days ago. when demolition commenced. The men at work ou the building have noticed its extraordinary dustiness and recall that before the Hutt Road was paved the place was an extremely dusty spot It is said that the dust lay inches thick on the roof.
