OBITUARY

Mr. W. A. McKay The death occurred at Wellington during the week-end of Mr. William Alexander AlcKay, a citizen who played a large part in classifying the mineral resources of New* Zealand. Air. AlcKaj , who was a son of the late Alexander AlcKay, Government geologist, was born at Dunedin 66 years ago, aud was educated at Alowbfay s School and Wellington College. He acted as assistant to his father for some years. in later years Mr. McKay was attached to the staff of the Dominion Museum. Recently he retired to take up residence at Fairfield, Levin. He was an enthusiastic amateur photographer, and was the author of a work on “Tlie Steam Engine and the Steam Compressor.” Tramping was one of his hobbies, and 50 years ago. at tlie age of 16. he made Ids first long trip alone, Wellington to Auckland, via Napier. Taupo, aud Rotorua. . Air. AlcKay is survived by his widow and four children, Airs. W. Johnstone, Miss Mavis McKay, and Alessrs. A. and R. McKay, and one brother, Air. Duncan AlcKay, accountant, of Wellington. The funeral .which took place, at Karori cemetery yesterday morning, was attended by a large number or friends, as well as some former colleagues of the Dominion Aluseum and the Government Laboratory Department. Mr. John Cunninghame The death 6f Mr. John Cunninghame at the age of 79 years is reported from Palmerston North by “Dominion Special Service. He w- a partner in the firm of Collinson and Cunninghame. Ltd. , . Air. Cunninghame was born in etia bane. County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, on June 14, 1856. where he entered the soft goods trade. After serving bis time for four years as an apprentice he was handed his indenture papers the dav he left for New Zealand as a young man of 22 years. He made the trip to this country in the barque Maria Van Dieman. arriving on January 31. 1879. After landing in New Zealanu lie spent two years in Nelson, followed bv ten years in Wellington, where be followed the soft goods trade. He came to Palmerston North 40 years ago as the branch manager of a Wellington firm. Later he was associated with the drapery department of the U.J.U.A., and finally in 1904 joined Air. L. 11. Collinson in the present large departmental business. . For many years AH. Cunninghame had been an adherent of St. Pauls Alethodist Church, sharing with Mr. G. H. Bennett the honour of being the oldest trustee. He was an enthusiastic poultry fancier, being successful as a breeder, exhibitor, and judge. Three sons and three daughters survived their father. The?_ are Messrs. J. It. Cunninghame < Wellington). Horace and Victor Cunnipgharoe (Palmerston North). Miss Myrtle Cunninghame (Palmerston North). Mrs. A. Harris (Blenheim), and Airs. E. P. AA'ix (Palmerston North). There are ten grandchildren. One sister is living in Northern Ireland.
