Paramount Week Releases

Inaugurated 15 years ago, Paramount week, which this year will be celebrated from September 2 to 7, symbolises ,a week of quality entertainment. During that period, pictures from the Paramount studios will be screened in leading theatres throughout New Zealand. The motion picture industry continues to advance from year to year, not only from a technical point of view but also as regards the stories filmed and the calibre of the players, who are constantly being attracted from the stage to the screen. A striking example is the acquisition of Noel Coward, most prominent figure in the theatre to-day, whose first film. “The Scoundrel,” will shortly be released by Paramount. In this production Coward is supported by notable New York dramatic actresses, including Julie Haydon, Martha Sleeper, Hope Williams. and Rosita Moreno.

Among the films which Paramount will release either during Paramount Week or shortly following that period are: — “Paris in Spring.” a musical romance with a Parisian background, featuring Mary Ellis, noted opera star, and Tulho Carminati, who scored a big s “? e ®® s op : posite Grace Moore iu “One Aight ot Love.”

Murray, Madge Evans, Lynn Overman, and David Holt. W. C. Wields’s new comedy, “The Man on the Flying Trapeze.” Charles Laughton’s very successful “Ruggles of Red Gap” will be screening at several theatres during Paramount Week. Production activities for the new season’s films are well under way at the Paramount studios, and already several pictures have been completed for the 1935-36 season. Although the final list of coming product will not be announced just yet, the following pictures .are either completed or being filmed: — “The Crusades,” . Cecil B. De Mille s new film, with n cast headed by Loretta Young, Henry Wilcoxon, and lan Keith. “Peter Ibbetson,” with Gary Cooper and Ann Harding,. “The Big Broadcast of 1935,” with an all-star cast including Bing Crosby, Jack Oakie. Ethel Merman, Charlie Ruggles, and Mary Boland. “The Last Outpost,” heading the cast of which are Cary Grant, Claude Rains and Gertrude Michael. “Annapolis Farewell,” which Alexander Hall is directing at the United States Naval Academy, with Sir Guy Standing and Richard Cromwell in the cast. Tiie new schedule will embrace almost every conceivable type of motion picture, from operettas to Westerns, and will include comedy, drama, romance, and adventure. With such a variety of entertainment, Paramount hopes to satisfy the taste of every section of the community.
