Mr. Forbes’s Stewardship
Sir, —Mr. Forbes gave a plain, straightforward account of his stewardship in his recent published statement, and nobody can gaiusay him the title he has earned of “Honest George,” but he slipped just a little when he said the raising of the exchange had not increased the cost of living. Before this was done I could buy a fat ewe in any saleyards for six shillings, but after the rise in exchange was felt this price kept on rising until to-day I have to pay 20/- for a good quality fat ewe.
Then, no explanation has been given to us as to why no notice was taken of the Royal Commission’s report wherein it advocated lower salaries for Parliamentarians and a decreased representation in the numbers of members. Furthermo.re, nothing was explained to us of the discoveries brought to light in regard to the administration of the Native Trust Department. Another item that requires explanation is why certaip men were placed into positions such as the. Mortgagee and Mortgagors Courts’ chairmanships without throwing these jobs open to competition by calling for applications from the many good men in New Zealand —some out of work —who could fill them just as well.—l am, etc., LAYMAN. Dfinnevirke, August 29.
