BELGIUM MOURNS

Tragedy has laid a heavy hand on the. throne of Belgium. It is only eighteen months since the nation was shocked and grieved by the news that the reigning monarch, King Albert, had been killed by a fall when mountaineering. Now comes the painful announcement that the young King Leopold has been bereft of his accomplished consort as the result of a motoring accident when he himself was at the wheel. The circumstances are peculiarly tragic, and the King’s bereavement the more poignant because of the romantic idyll which culminated in his marriage to Princess Astrid of Sweden. His young bride was most cordially welcomed by the Belgian people, and her popularity has increased during her residence among them. The world will extend to him and to Belgium its deepest sympathy.
