BLACKBIRDS AT NIGHT
One night when the moon was just past the full a rather unusual thing happened. About 9 o’clock we were surprised to hear a blackbird carolling in a tree by our house. ■ And theft every blackbird tn the neighbourhood commenced and some started to quarrel. This went on until we went to bed, and several times during the night when waking I heard them still. I have often heard magpies at night-time but never blackbirds'. —From Te Raupa raha’s letter.
