DOMINION CENTENARY
Co-operation in Celebrations
on National Basis
AUCKLAND MAYOR’S PLAN
By Telegraph—Press Association.
Auckland, August 29. Co-operation between the principal cities in organising a comprehensive series of celebrations for the Dominion’s centenary in 1940 was advocated by the Mayor- of Auckland, Mr. Ernest Davis, at the City Council to-night. He paid a tribute to what was being done at Wellington with a view to holding an international exhibition, but considered an approach should be made through the Government to ensure a coordinated effort. He felt there was no room, for parochial considerations, and the celebrations should be national in conception and character. The Government would be failing in its duty if it did not give a lead to the whole Dominion. Mr. Davis emphasised that each centre had something distinctive to offer, /and a scheme could be arranged so that people could attend events in each province. Mr. Davis also put forward a suggestion that Auckland should make an unique contribution to the occasion by striving for the amalgamation of all local authorities on the Tamaki isthmus and North Shore as Greater Auckland by the time of the centenary celebrations. He admitted the task would not be easy, but the present multiplicity of local authorities was not in keeping with modern administrative requirements. The Mayor said he proposed to call a representative conference for the formation, before the end of the current year, of an advisory committee for the whole metropolitan area.
