FORECAST FOR TO-DAY’S WEATHER.
Changeable and squally; showers in most districts.
Following is tlie weather report and forecast issued by the Meteorological Office, Wellington, for the 24 hours ending 4 .p.m. to-day:— A deep westerly depression covers New Zealand to-day, while an anti-cyclone is centred to the north. , Winds between westerly and south-westerly, strong generally and still of gale force in many places; later winds becoming more southerly and decreasing. Seas in New Zealand waters rough to high on the west coast and in Foveaux Strait, and also in offshore waters on the east coast. Strong west to south-west winds and rough seas in the eastern Tasman Sea, but conditions gradually moderating. . . , Weather changeable and squally, with showers in most districts and some heavy falls in western areas; hail on parts of the Otago coast. Temperatures becoming colder. YESTERDAY’S WEATHER. Wellington— Dull, threatening conditions prevailed in the early morning, but the clouds rapidly dispersed, and during most of the day the weather was sunny. A boisterous"north-westerly wind continued until 3 p.m., when it decreased, and at 4 p.m. a light south-westerly wind sprang up. Minimum temperature on Wednesday night, 51-ldeg.; maximum yesterday, CS.ldeg.; at 4 p.m., Rafntkdi at “The Dominion” building for 24 hours ended midnight, .03in. Rainfall for August, 2.988 in.; for year. 25.678 in. Palmerston North.— Fine, but boisterous; strong westerly gale; moderate tem-
peratures. Masterton. — Glimpses of sunshine; heavy passing clouds; strong, gusty northwesterly wind reaching gale force at times. Wanganui— A fine and sunny morning, becoming overcast later. There was a moderate north-west wind. Wainukurau.—A howling south-west gale of wind blew practically without intermission throughout the day and still continued late last evening; at times the wind reached an almost cyclonic force. The barometer fell rapiulj. Auckland. — Boisterous westerly wind, overcast and threatening. The barometer • was falling and registered 29.70 in. Christchurch.— Fine in the morning, but conditions were threatening in the afternoon when a south-west wind was blowing. There were a few very light showers toward evening. The barometer had a rising tendency and registered
29.50 in. Dunedin.— Cold and unsettled; light showers fell during the day and a squally, south-west wind was blowing. The maximum temperature was 42deg. Hie barometer was steady at 29.30 in.
