ROOT CUTTINGS
To Take Now Plants which particularly lend themselves to propagation by root cuttings are anchusas, oriental Ipoppies, phloxes, gaillardias, statice latifolia, paeonies, hardy geraniums and nicotinna affinis. Take the root cuttings now before the plants concerned get any further advanced iu growth. Lift each plant with care to get up the roots undamaged. If the soil does not come away by careful shaking, dip tile root up and down in water.
■When plants make thick roots which for the most part go straight down in the soil, tills horizontal habit of growth must be observed with the cuttings. They, in other words, must be planted upright, the top uppermost. To be certain of this, at the bottom of the chosen root make a sloping, wedge-shaped cut. Measure lip 2in. and cut through quite straight. The sloping cut marks the bottom: the straight cut the top. Similar 2in. lengths can be obtained until all the root is used.
