Steadily the desire for comfort is shown in styles. Shoes, we are informed by an expert, are to be sensible as well as chic. It is all of a piece with the trend of discussions on dietetics, housing and exercise, especially the latter. Once womenfolk have taken up sports seriously they change their minds in regard to footwear, except for gala occasions. It is a movement to be watched by the observant retailer, for it means not only transfer of sales, but a new development in them. Athletica and foot culture are here to stay. Of course, for dress occasions, the eternal feminine reigns, and there are many new ideas now showing, Court shoes have pride of place, and made of glace with suede trimmings to tone look very attractive. Sandal styles are also very smart, and look well in mixed fabrics.

Suede is ideal and looks rather daintier than leather, particularly when perforated, as so many will be for summer.

Bar shoes will always be wanted, as there are lots of women who do not teel safe without a strap for support, in spite of the fact that court shoes appear to be made so much better fitting, and as a result are safer to wear than previously. Heels are to be varied,’and dependent on the occasion of wear. For evening they are extremely high’, but the shape appears to be more comfortable t> wear, and they do not go under the foot so much. The straight small Cuban heel is the popular height for day wear. Stitching is pretty general and adds a rather decorative note to what is sometimes a dull shoe. For evenings gold and silver kid are still much in demand.
