JUMPERS IN ACTION

Work at New Plymouth

IMPRESSIVE HALF Sporting Song and Gold Mission Dominion Special Service. New Plsjnouth, August 28. Threatened rain did not eventuate for the final gallops this morning, and tne New Plymouth tracks after yesterday s drying wind were greatly improved. Sprinting effort® on the part of nat horses comprised the only work of consequence in that section, but most of the jumpers were peen in action over tie steeplechase fences and hurdles. Golden Rill and Tahurangi ran a comfortable three furlong® iu 39 4-5, botn finishing well. Gold Mission and Sporting Song were really impressive in their half-mile, which they left behind iu 52. The pace was fairly even throughout, the first two iutlongs taking 25 2-5. Both went strongly in the concluding stages. Mustang worked solidly over a round, brushing up the straight. Red Sand took 41 for her three fur°"potere beat Prosy Boy by a length and a half over a half-mile in 54 1-5, the first two furlong® in 26J. For steeplechasers this was a particularly fine effort. After breakfast Lavington (lito) schooled over four hurdles on /he course proper. He jumped rather high at the second obstacle, but the other three he took in his stride. Ho has obviously done n fair amount of schooling and is iu great heart to make a successful debut. Orapai (Dulieu) schooled over the same course. The first two hurdles he clouted hard, but gave a better display over tiie second two. This effort, however, was a long way below his best.

First-class Display. Clarion Call (Jenkin®) was responsible for a brilliant display of fast jumping over two rounds of the inside fences, the brush, hencoop and double, taking these obstacles in his stride. As he possesees a fair amount of pace he look® a good., prospect for the maiden hunters event to-morrow. Flockhart (Parkes) jumped better than Petrarch (A. McDonald) over a round of the obstacles. She showed more speed in jumping and landed well each time, concluding her task by jumping the post and rails ns well. Petrarch (McDonald) then ran a circuit on the course proper, the final five furlongs in 1.10 2-.>. Spender (Liddall) gave a bright exhibition over four schooling hurdles. He showed remarkable ability in retrieving himself from errors of judgment and shape® like an early winner over the battens. , , The Storm Wind (Liddall) worked late and jumped tho obstacles placed up for the race day steeplechases. He jumped the sod wall and post and rails well, but ran down the brush fence slightly. He took the double in good style, however, and hi® effort is considered eminently satisfactory. Routine pace work was allotted Red Bray, Waitaunaha, Treasure Hunt, Croyden, Blue Tiger, Revival, Bright Sky, Headmistress, Refresher, Glenvane, Aussie Ra, Davistock, Ngatirahiri, High Test and others engaged at the meeting this week. With the exception of the Stratford, Hawera and South Taranaki contingents, all the visiting horses have put iu an appearance. Mustang is to contest the Whenuakura Handicap, and the stable will rely on Sporting Song in the Waverley Handicap. To Race on Second Day.

Tonnerre and Musquil were unable to come through by the Auckland train this morning, and Tonnerre was scratched at 9 p.m. yesterday for hi® engagements on the first day. Both will run an Saturday. Taura Lad was not brought through to the meeting. He ricked his shoulder on Monday and was relieved of his engagement in the Egmont-Wanganui Steeplechase at 7.45 p.m. yesterday.
