DEMOLITION PLAN
Famous London Terrace
NEW BLOCK OF FLATS
(British Official Wireless.) Rugby, August 24. After many false alarms, it is now definitely announced that the demolition of the famous Adelphi Terrace, overlooking the River Thames, will be commenced early next year. Tenants there and in other buildings on a considerable site have received notice to quit by March 25 next. The proposed development will probably include the construction of a huge block of flats, with provision of office accommodation for many societies and organisations whose headquarters have long been In the area. The demolition will involve a labyrinth of arches aud vaults on which the present buildings stand and which have acquired an almost legendary repute.
The area known as Adelphi was laid out by the four Adams brothers toward the end of tlie 18th century. In the present century it has been the home of many literary celebrities, including the late Thomas Hardy, Sir James Barrie, and Mr. Bernard Shaw.
