BASKETBALL TOURNEY

Lady Galway to Officiate at Opening

COMMENCING TO-MORROW

Basketball players from all. over New Zealand are arriving at Wellington, tor to-morrow afternoon will take place the official opening by her Excellency Lady Galway of the New Zealand Basketball. Association’s ninth Dominion tournament. Over 300 visitors are expected to attend the tournament.

The time and place of the official opening ceremony have been fixed as 2.30 p.m. to-morrow at the Mount Cook School courts, in Buckle Street. There will be a parade and march past of teams, including first and second . grade trophy holders. At present Wellington hold the New Zealand Cup, Canterbury the Annie Brown Cup, Poverty Bay the President’s Shield, and Marlborough the Hayhurst Cup. These will be the leading teams participating in the parade. Some 19 othet teanw will support them. The opening matches will be played tomorrow morning, when Wellington will play Hawke’s Bay and Wellington Minor Wairarapa. Play will continue all day Thursday, Friday and Saturday, culminating in the final match for the President’s Shield and the North Island versus the South .on Saturday afternoon. The following referees have been appointed to act at the tournament: Mesdames McKenzie (Auckland), D. Cleland (Hutt Valley), Misses E. Cahill (Napier), O. Wharton (Wellington), L. Sturroctv (Wellington), G. Basstian (Southland). S. Foster (Otago), Messrs. Howe (Wellington), R. J. Thompson (Ashburton), F. Malcolmson (South Canterbury), F. Lovatt (Canterbury), A. Kinross (Southland), S. G. Macfarlane (Ashburton). Mis» Gordon (Waikato) has been appointed South Island selector, while Mrs. J. C. Hayhurst (South Canterbury) will select the North Island team. In the event of wet weather, play -will be transferred to the Show Buildings, and possibly also to the Drill Hall.
