Buried Under Fall of Earth

ACCIDENT IN CUTTING

Dominion Special Service. Napier, August 26.

Completely buried under a fall of 25 tons of earth, Mr. Thomas Sweetings, married, aged 29, was killed this morning while working in a cutting on the bay view side of quarantine island, which is in the Ahurirl Lagoon about seven miles from Napier. Mr. Sweetings, who was employed by tiie Public Works Department, was engaged witli another workman who saw the slip coming. Both jumped for safety, but Mr. Sweetings tripped on a piece of timber and was caught by flic fall. Despite frantic efforts to extricate him, it was half an hour before the body was recovered.

Mrs. Sweetings is the postmistress at Bay View. There is one child.
