RANGITIKEI HUNT
Racing on Heavy Track
MISS PANGO’S CUP
Trouvaille Wins Flat
Double
(By Telegraph. —From “The Watcher.")
Palmerston North, July 24. Rain marred the annual meeting of the Rangitikei Hunt Club held at Marton today. It fell steadily until about the fifth race, when it lifted; there was also a biting south-east wind that made conditions very bleak and unpleasant, while the ground underfoot was also bad for patrons. Needless to state the going was extremely heavy and in places was under water. The club nevertheless came out surprisingly well and showed only a very slight decrease in the totalisator returns. With, a fine day they would have had a good meeting. Hunting enthusiasts, both local ana from the surrounding districts, gave loyal and enthusiastic support, and a feature ot the three jumping races was the fact that there was not 4, single fall. The Hunt Cup Steeplechase, which, in addition to the stake, carried a trophy presented bv Mr. K. McK. Duncan, was won by Mr. J. Brici’s Miss Pango, and the Riddiford .Steeplechase for a trophy presented by Mr. J. G. Wilson and prize money donated by Mr. J. Brice, master of the hunt, was won by Mr. Q. O. Wilson’s The Storm Wind, trained and ridden by his owner. Brigadore won the hurdle race, also ridden by his owner. The feature of the"flat racing was the double success of the Waikato representative, Trouvaille. The attendance was small, and the totalisator turnover was £1719/10/-, compared with £1778 last year, a decrease of £SS/10/-. The Storm Wind Easily. The Riddiford Steeplechase for hunters saw six of the seven starters ridden by their owners, and the race was won easily by The Storm Wind. He and War Eagle always had the running. War Eagle tired'over the last mile, giving hie opponent a very comfortable victory. Glenlevin was a poor third and Gisborne Jack fourth. All the starters completed the course. A Close Finish. The Hamilton representative Trouvaille was made favourite in the maiden race, and he just won in a close finish. Lady Hoariri and Popette began best, leading to the straight from Trouvaille, Royal King, Tidal Song, and Middle. Popette challenged Lady Hoariri in the straight and they were lighting out a great battle when Trouvaille dashed up on the rails and joined in the struggle. Trouvaille just got up from Lady Hoariri. with Popette only a head away. Royal King was fourth and Donegal next, with the bunch well back, headed by Frugal and Tidal Song. The winner, who is by the Martian horse Raceful, was fortunate to get up on the -inner of the leaders, but he finished with great determination. Lady Hoariri handled the heavy going well. Outclassed Opponents. Brigadore outclassed his opponents in the hurdle race. His rider was in no hurry, letting him lie toward the rear
early, the pacemakers being Gailivanter. Mino's, and Kaola. Brigadore went up over the last two fences, and led over the last obstacle to run home a comfortable winner from Kaola. Gailivanter hired and was beaten for third place by Headland. Headland got otf poorly, was right up in the middle stages, and dropped back again only to come with a rattle at the finish. Ho may have been unlucky not to get second. Brigadore jumped brilliantly. Favourite Last. Only four ran in the hack seven furlongs, and Arouse, a warm favourite, finished last, being badly beaten by the going. Arouse and Treasure Hunt made the running to the half-mile, where Treasure Hunt took Charge. Arouse hung on to the straight when be stopped to a walk. Treasure Hunt had a very easy win from Spender and tVyndale. Arouse floundered badly in the heavy ground. The winner’s success was long overdue. He bandied the going well. A Good Contest. The Hunt Cup .Steeplechase provided a good contest, though it was finally won decisively by the favourite. Miss Pango. She was ridden by AV. Bowden, and made practically all the running. Croydon loomed up as a dangerous opponent over the last half, but he finally tired and left Miss Pango to run home alone, while i Red Berry came strongly at the finish to beat Croyden for second. The Drone was fourth, with Waitaunaha irnd Conference well back. The winner jumped well, but the whole field, except The Drone, gave good displays. Red Berry is a brother to High Commissioner. Amateur Riders’ Event. The gentlemen riders’ flat race was won comfortably by Lady Arikitoa, ridden by Mr. J. Morris. She was always well placed, and after Airforce had retired from the lead Lady Arikitoa took charge with Even Money and Gainsay. Gainsay challenged Lady Arikitoa in the run home, but had no chance. Sapless, Petrarch, and Clarion Call did best of the others. . Gainsay, Petrarch and Lady Arikitoa were very evenly backed in that order. Petrarch looked unlucky not to run into the money. Trouvalle’s Double.
The maiden wintier, Trouvaille, penalised 51b. and carrying a further 21b. overweight, started again in the concluding event, and secured a double. He allowed Dampier to lead him’ into _ the straight, where he challenged and finished stronger than the Trentham representative. Popette and Revival, who had followed them in the running, maintained their positions, with Spender fifth. Ringapoto and Pukepapa got left, and took no part in the race. The winner and Dampier were very evenly backed, and the supporters of the latter lost money. He ran a good race, but his stablemate Colenso was never prominent.
