CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL BLACKS

Mr. Tindill, Cricketer-Footballer

Members and supporters of the Midland Cricket Club held a short meeting last night to congratulate Mr. E. Tindill, a member of the club, on his selection for the Rugby football team to tour Great Britain, and to present to him a parting gift. The ehairman, Mr. H. Hateli, said that he believed that it was the first time an All Black to tour England had been selected from their ranks. Throughout the country similar gatherings were being held for members of the team, which indicated a pleasing interest by citizens in the men going" overseas to carry forward the banner of football. At the same time the team would be showing people what type of man came from New Zealand. and he was confident Mr. Tindill would not disappoint. He bad all the qualities of success, and his successes he had taken with characteristic modesty. The speaker recalled the time when Mr. Tindill, as a "little fair-haired boy.” entered his own team, and later his ability was discovered by the seniors, since when he bad never looked back. Their guest was a shining example of the club’s method of encouraging the juniors, and he hoped that long would it be so. Acknowledging a gift which Mr. Hatch handed to him and the speaker's remarks, Mr. Tindill said that he regretted that he would be missing from behind the stumps for the greater part of next season. but he would return to the cricket field immediately he was back. Good wishes for Mr. Tindill on behalf of “the old brigade” were expressed by Mr. F. K. Kelling, who assisted to found rhe Midland Cricket Club 52 years ago. lie said that ho. believed there were surviving only two w]io had helped to found Mr. Tindiil’s football club, Athletic, in ISS7—CoI. G. F. C. Campbell and Mr. I). Harris Hastings, of Dunedin. Adding to the previous speakers’ eulogies. Mr. W. A. Baker said that, as an All Black, he would find that the hardest

games would be off the field, but they had no fear for Mr. Tindill in that respect. Congratulations on behalf of the active members were voiced by F. Bryant, club captain, and others who eulogised the All Black were Mr. W. P. Walker, vice-president, and L. G. Clark. A number of letters adding praise on behalf of members unable to be present were read. Social For Mr. B. S. Sadler

More than 300 persons were present at a social and dance in rhe Masonic Hall. Berhampore. on Saturday in honour of rhe All Black. Mr. B. S. Sadler, who was presented with a wallet by Mr. Duncan, a former headmaster of Berliampore School. Mr. Sadler was accompanied by his mother, who was presented with a bouquet by Miss .1. Maisey, an old pupil of tlie school. The speakers during the evening were Mr. Pr.iil . who was sportsmaster at the school while Mr. Sadler was a pupil. Mr. Bennett, a former headmaster. Miss Hurley, :i former headmistress. and Mr. S S. Doan, chairman of the Now Zealand Rugby Union. Mr. A. McDonald, coach of the Wellington College Old Boys' team was also present. Items wore contributed bv Mr. and Mrs. G. Stark. Mr. W. W. Marshall. Miss O. Daniel, and Miss I. Chalk. Mr. L. Elston was the accompanist. The committee responsible for the social comprised Messrs. A. D. Rowe (chairman), R. Dawe (secretary), 11. J. Maisey, A. 11. Fisher. N. Goff. A. Osbourne, and T. G. Wildermoth.
