WIN FOR AUSTRALIA

England Beaten at Tennis

London, July 20.

Australia defeated England in the three-day tennis match at Eastbourne, played on Davis Cup lines, which was designed to give the English team practice for the final match of the Davis Cup series. Australia won three matches, England one, and the fifth was abandoned' owing to rain. The final singles resulted:— J. 11. Crawford (Australia) defeated 11. W. Austin (England). 6-2. 6-4, 3-6. 6-3.

F. J. Ferry (England) v. V. McGrath (Australia), 2-6, 6-2, 3-1 (match abandoned on account of rain). Full of confidence after defeating Perry, Crawford drove deeply and powerfully. He served well, volleyed more often than usual and altogether overshadowed the Englishman’s stylish but less virile game. Perry and McGrath fought at a great juice. .McGrath, in the first set, hammered backhand drives straight down the- line with remarkable accuracy, but Perry, intensifying his boisterous belligerence, overwhelmingly won the second set.

The result of the doubles yesterday was:—

A. K. Quist and D. I’. Turnbull (Australia) defeated G. P. Hughes and C. It. D. Tuckev (Britain). 3-6. 6-3. 8-6, 6-4

Turnbull was the best of the four. He served and smashed with savage accuracy. The Australians were generally superior in volleying and smashing.

Tuekey. England’s new Davis Cup recruit, is playing much better with added experience. He is serving powerfully and his ground strokes have improved.

FINANCIAL SUCCESS

Mr. Harry Hopman, writing in lhe “Suu” on tennis subjects, says: The Australians’ tour has been a financial success. The profits, without the match now being played at Eastbourne, where most of the seats have been sold, should approach £2OOO sterling. At Wimbledon in the Davis Cup inter-zone final to decide which team is to meet Britain in the final, J. D. Budge (U.S.A.) defeated Henkel (Germany), 7-5, 11.-9, 6-8, 6-1, It was rather a tame encounter, Henkel playing a defensive game throughout. Budge made many errors through impatience. Rain caused a postponement of tlie von Cramm v. W. E. Allison match. MALFROY WINS FINAL (Received July 21, 6.30 p.m.) London, July 21. In lhe Frinton tennis tournament final, C. E. Malfroy (New Zealand) defeated Nishimura (Japan), 6-2. 8-6.
