NEW SOUTH WALES BEATEN By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright (Received July 21, 6.30 p.m.) Sydney, July 21. Though down two goals in the first live minutes, fhe New Zealand women’s hockey team yesterday convincingly defeated New South Wales by three goals to two, enhancing its prospects in the All-Australia carnival at Melbourne. In splendid defence, .Miss Mortimer excelled. Miss Hansen, centre-half, was the chief agent in upsetting the pacy attack of the home forwards. Mrs. Reid, captain, was always cool. The New Zealanders regarded Ihe ground as perfect, though they confessed that they were accustomed lo more bounce. ‘They quickly mastered the necessity for driving stickwork without losing the faculty for short passing. A feature of their play was their skilful stoppage of the bail on the full. They were generally superior in positional play.
Miss McKenzie, inner right, was easily the best forward, being thrustful. fast and neat. Miss (’otter, on the left wing, was again reliable, though closely watched by “Tory” Wicks, the New South Wales skipper. Miss McKenzie scored the three goals for the New Zealand team, which was’as follow:—Mrs. O’Connor (goal). Misses McDonald. Mortimer, Gudsell. Hansen, Mackie. Mrs. Donald. Miss McKenzie. Mrs. Reid. Misses Dahlberg and Cotter.
The tourists were expected to arrive yos-terday at Melbourne, whore the interstate women’s hockey tournament opens-to-morrow. New Zealand has drawn to play New South Wales in the tournament: to-morrow afternoon.
