LONDON’S NEW TOWN CLERK
Man of 36 Appointed "Dominion" Special Service—By Air Mail. London, June 22. A man of 36 has been appointed to tiie most highly prized civic post in Britain He becomes town clerk of the City of London, at £2500 a year, succeeding Sir James Bell, who retires at 70 for reasons of ill-health. Mr. A. T. Roach, until this week principal assistant in the city town clerk’s office, is the lucky man. He was elected from a list of five candidates by the Court of Common Council of the City of London Corporation. Mr. Roach accepted the congratulations of Hie court with obvious delight. He was born iu London and came to tiie Guildhall straight from tiie City of London School 20 years ago. While rising from rank to rank in the town clerk's office, this energetic young man managed to gain his LL.B.. winning scholarships and prizes at London University. When he returned to his office after his election, the entire staff stood and cheered him.
