"EVERYGIRL DAY”
Cheerful Collectors For Y.W.C.A.
The Y.W.C.A. is full of bright and breezy ideas, and they certainly deserved every bit of the excellent support they received for one of the happiest notions they have yet conceived — a streqt-day appeal which took the form of an “Everygirl Day” in Wellington yesterday. The Y.W.C.A., as everyone knows, Is an organisation dominated by a wonderful spirit of friendliness and cheer, and this went a long way towards making “Everygirl Day” one of the brightest street days that the city has seen. Perhaps "sunniest” would be a more apt word. First of all, it was a sunny day—one of those rare and glorious warm days that manage to sandwich themselves in between a batch of winter frosts and drizzles. Then the collectors all wore sunny smiles and rattled their boxes merrily and said, “Help the Y.W.C.A.” with an upward lilt as the crowds came by, so that not even the hardest of hearts could refuse. One man asked if “the smallest coin he had” would do, and after searching deep in pockets for a lurking 3d. or 6d., discovered that he had nothing smaller than a florin, which be yielded with a smile for the good cause! The “Everygirl” idea was carried out by two girls dressed in Maori mats collecting in one street, a Spanish senorita at another point of vantage, a cow-. boy (or girl) or two, a geisha girl rattling her box at another corner, and several other nationalities in various parts of the city—a gay and original idea that immediately attracted the public. And last, but by no means least, was the pie-cart. “Buy a pie and help the Y.,” said the advertisements. “Hot pies, meat pies, chicken pies, rhubarb pies,” called a friendly clown, pointing the way to the pie-cart behind the Post Office. Here, during the lunch hour especially, was a crowd gathered round a roomy cart munching the delicious pies and drinking hot coffee—all of which could be bought for Gd.—a most original and profitable notion. There was also a procession of sandwich girls proclaiming the advantages of the many clubs connected with the Y.W.C.A.
