NEWS IN BRIEF
Milk-Bottle Caps
With a daily “round” of about 30,000 homes, the Wellington municipal milk supply is a tremendous undertaking, demanding constant attention to details. One of these is the provision of caps for the bottles. Millions of these are used every year and now the Milk Department is calling for tenders for the supply of 6,2(0,000 caps. The department has a large number in stock, otherwise the tender would probably have been for about 10,000,000. The caps are generally imported from Great Britain or Canada and are made from spruce wood, which provides the purest pulp that can lie obtained and is ideal for the department’s purposes. Plumbers anti Infallibility.
“I would say that plumbers are not infallible,” said a witness in the Supreme Court, Wellington, yesterday, when he was being pressed to say if he thought a plumber was competent to do work mentioned in the case being heard. “We know plumbers are not infallible,” remarked the Chief Justice, Sir Michael Myers. “You only have to read ‘Punch’,” said Mr. W. H. Cunningham. “Even lawyers arc not infallible,” confessed Mr. O. C. Mazeugarb.
Cliief Justice on Wills. Arguing a will euse in the Supreme Court, Wellington, yesterday, Mr, E. P. Hay quoted authorities on a point not raised by counsel opposing him. “Why put up straw men and then knock them down?” asked the Chief Justice, Sir Michael Myers. “I know It is difficult for counsel, having made research on a point expecting it to be raised, to resist the temptation to quote even when the point isn’t raised.” Mr. Hay said that was not his justification at all. “Your Honour has such an experience of aud such a reputation on these will cases that it seemed obvious to me this point would occur to you and must be covered," he said. Though the three counsel engaged in the case had quoted numerous authorities at length on the law touching the point in dispute, time was not taken for a reserved judgment, an immediate verbal decision being given in about three sentences by the Chief Justice.
