MONEY FOR CHARITIES
Position of « Public Body
By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, July 16. A considerable difference of opinion was revealed when the Auckland Transport Board to-day considered applications from charitable and other organisations for donations. Some members thought that all applications should be declined until the board had ascertained its financial position. They suggested that the board was not paying its way. Other members, including the former chairman (Mr. J. A. C. Alluni), disagreed that the position was doubtful.
A request from the Swimming Association was declined, and the board then considered one from the Boys’ Employment Committee. After discussing aspects of boys’ employment, the board decided, by six votes to four, to give £lO. The next request, -which -was from the Crippled Children Society, had a most sympathetic reception. Mr. J. Sayegh, who bad previously opposed such donations, moved that the board donate £25. Mr. E. J. Phelan, another Labour member, said that every trading concern and every individual should put his hands into his pockets for such a cause.
The board also gave £lO to the Discharged Prisoners’ Aid Society.
