Army Officer’s Visit to New Zealand
A member of the Guides Cavalry in India, Major C. W. Free, M.C., is visiting New Zealand with his wife. They were due to arrive at Auckland in the Wanganella yesterday.' Major Free served with the New Zealand and Australian troops in Gallipoli and France before transferring to India. At present, he is D.A.A. and Q.M.G. of the troops in Bengal and Assam.. The normal garrison of Bengal has been reinforced for the last two and a half years by two extra brigades of infantry. These additional troops are required to combat terrorism which has resulted in the murder of various officials, and to restore the confidence of loyal subjects. llalor Free said in Perth that the conditions in Bengal had much improved. biit there was still a great deal of plotting against loyal servants of the Government.
Major and Mrs. Free are visiting New Zealand to see Mrs. Free’s father, Mr. J. P. Perry (Masteilpn), ami also their children, who are in different parts of New Zealand.
