TEACHING TRAFFIC SENSE

It is pointed out to-day that most valuable work can be done in the schools to develop traffic sense in children. No doubt this subject is given some attention, more in sonic schools, perhaps, than in others; but is 4t enough? The best time to learn is in the school period of life, when the senses, and their physical reactions, are most responsive to training and discipline. One school in England has adopted a realistic system of traffic drill designed to accustom the children to street signals and lights. That there is need for systematic training along this and similar Dines in New Zealand schools is demonstrated by the casualty lists. Small children, boys on bicycles, and dogs, are the terrors of motorists, for it is.almost impossible to tell from their movements what they are going to do next.' Unless children are taught traffic sense in their plastic years they will grow up as careless and indifferent to the rules of safety on the road as so many of their elders appear to be to-day.
