NATIONAL HOPES

Line From Trentham NOTES AND COMMENTS Horses For Australia

(By

The Watcher.)

-Fourteen Grand National Steeplechase horses met at the Wellington meeting, On the form disclosed here few y ill go past Tudor and Dunmure, while A alpeen and Riotous will also have friends.

Promising Galloper. Taillight is a promising soit for .he new season, when he will be three jeais old. He has done very little racing, but in every case he has shown galloping ability and is sure to improve, fai.ught ia by Kay Comet from Owlscombe, by Autumnus from Glenowlet, by Clauranold from Madowla, so that he belongs to one of the stoutest of the Stonyhurst families.

Derby Winner Going. The Gisborne trainer, A. Mclntosh, was at Trentham last week. He will be l e ? ( ' r " in" for Australia early next month with Grand Sport, Sporting Blood, and ainsin" two-vear-old unraced brother to Sporting Blood. The youngster is a brown in colour.

More for Australia. . Silver Jubilee, Gallant Knight, and the two-vear-old colt by Brazen from Autaia will ‘leave for Sydney by the M anganella on August 16. in charge of their trainer. IV. Townsend. Silver Jubilee is engaged in the Bpsom Handicap, Caulfield Cup and Other big events, while the two-year-old is entered for the Breeders Plate. The date of the departure for Australia of E. Pope’s team has been fixed lor August 16, and Gay Sheila, Gay Blonde, Gav Sheik, Gay Brunette, and Gay Lot will leave by the AVaiiganclla on that date.

Sold to Australia. , , . Negotiations have been completed for the sale of Anslem to an Australian buyer who is understood to be a patron of J. T Jamieson’s stable, and the gelding left Wellington for Sydney on the Marama on Friday. Anslem is a three-year-old gelding by Colossus from Lady Egletine, dam of Green Linnet and Headlady, and he was -owned by R. Brough. A substantial offer, also from Australia, was made for Bantry, who m his only start to date won decisively. However, his owner, Mr. J. J. Barry, declines to sell. Bantry, a two-year-old gelding by Acre from Rapt, is also in Brough’s stable.

Kept for Riccarton. Billy Boy did not race at the Wellington meeting, but was reserved for the Grand National, where it is anticipated that he will do better on top of the ground. Similarly it is expected that Verden will he better suited by the ground at Riccarton.

Hunting Bag. . Hunting Bag has joined the stable ot D. O’Connor at Riccarton. At one stage of his career he promised to be a useful galloper, but his form for a long time has been disappointing. He may follow the example of several of the breed and turn out a good jumper. Leaving To-day. A. D. Webster, who sent over his team to Australia earlier this month, will sail for Sydney by the Wanganclla from Auckland to-day.

Broke Collarbone. When Cardhu was brought down in the Matai Hack Steeplechase at Trentham on Thursday, the jockey D. J. Burgess broke a collarbone. His Form Looks Good.

Taking a line through Pahu and Manawatu, Monastic’s form over country last week measures well up to the open class.

Winter Cup Prospects. Arctic King is in the Winter Cup, and although this is a race in which a slow beginner is usually at a disadvantage, he cannot be left out of calculations. Royal Banquet and Rebel Lad are two more of last week’s good hacks who are in the Riccarton mile, which has often been won by a hack. Returned Home.

Sixteen of the southern horses competing at the Wellington winter meeting returned home last night.

Jumped Badly. Rasouli jumped too poorly ever to be a possibility in the Winter Hurdle Race, bu.t he was closer at the finish than at any of the earlier stages of the running. Only One Try. Rebel Chief did not handle the going well here on Tuesday last, and he was sent home without further racing. He should do better at Riccarton.

On the Down Grade. Water Power failed to make any showing at Trentham last week, and her form was a long way below her previous visits. Possibly she missed the rain, but she now looks well on the down grade.

Heavy in Both Places. It is said that Royal Limond was pulled up in the Wellington Steeplechase because the heavy ground did not suit him. Was it not heavy going at Ellerslie?

Graball’s Condition. An expert investigation, aided by . the application of cocaine, was made into the lame foot of the Southland steeplechaser Graball last week, but the real source of the trouble could not be ascertained. It is unfortunate for Mr. W. E. Hazlett that lameness should overtake his Grand National Steeplechase candidate, as the son of Cynic has developed into an accomplished cross-country performer. No Risks Taken. Black Duke raced only once at Wellington, in the Trentham Hurdles on the first day. He slightly injured a knee in his last race in the South Island, and as the race did not improve it, it was decided to take no risks with him on Saturday. He should be all right for the Grand National meeting.

Qualified for Jumpers’ Flats. It was reported last week that Hunting Jay may race in Australia, but as he is now qualified over hurdles he is eligible for the Jumpers’ Flat Race at Riccarton.

Showed Speed. Fiord is on the small side, but he has a lot of pace, and may be better suited by the firmer going at the National meeting.

By Narrow Margins. 'Half a head and a head were the narrow margins that separated 'the supporters of Linguist from two straightout dividends last week. In Linguist and Valarth the stable of A. E. Dedham has got two very useful hacks, (both of whom stick on well. Wheriko at the Stud.

Wheriko, the big Night Raid horse that A, D. Webster w T on races with after he hud been cheaply purchased from Mr. Erie Connolly, of Melbourne, will be at the stud here during the new-season, and he will get a good start. Among the mares that have .been booked to him are Lookout (Valkyrian—Keep Watch), Red Lassie (Bisogne—Red Helen), Moutoa Ivanova, Wench, Martian Princess, Limosa and Lady Limond.

Fancied and Failed. Quite Soon was a fancied runner in the concluding event of last week’s meeting,

but ho failed to Show up. It is thought that -the going was against him.

Unusual. Riotous hit the fence all round which eliminated him from the Wellington Steeplechase, while on iSaturday in the July Steeplechase he .stifled the sod wail badly the list time. He is usually such a safe jumper that ,it was astonishing to find him eliminated in both starts 'by mistakes at his fences. Hit a Fence.

Anemometer struck herself very badly during the running of the July 'Steeplechase on Saturday, and had a deep incised wound on one of her fetlocks on returning to Uie birdcage.

Will be Forward. Debham will be one of the team to be taken to Australia 'by T. R. George, and his form here last week indicates that he will be well favoured for engagements over there. His sire, Lackham, suggests speed, but his dam, Deborah, was by Martian from Hebrew Maid, so he may get a distance.

Just Below. Several horses that raced last week put up very creditable .performances, but they were not quite equal to the company. Among them were Full Throttle, Pladie, Good Hunting, Korero, Royal Feast, Royal Gallant and Glenvane. This Week’s Racing.

The annual race meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Hunt'Club, at Hastings on Saturday, is the only fixture in the Dominion this week.

Death of Bold Jim. Bold Jim dropped dead after work at Awapuni on Saturday morning. He was a five-year-old gelding by Lackham from Railand, and was the last foal of his dam.

Grand National Weights. Handicaps for the Grand Nationals and Winter Cup are due to-day week.

Short of a Gallop. Sunny Maid showed her usual pace for half a mile on Saturday, but did not run on. It is probable that the knock she gave herself earlier in the week found her a bit short of a gallop.

Related to Winter Hurdles Winner. Valarth. the winner of the Novice Handicap on Saturday, is a sister to Dissemble. She is out of Dismantle, who is a sister to the Winter Hurdles winner, Overhaul.

A Failure. Sea Fox was one of the prominent failures at the Wellington meeting. lie may do better at Riccarton. where he has previously been a winner. New Sire for Koatanui.

The Anglo-Irish Bloodstock Agency has purchased, on behalf of Mr. G. M. Currie, the stallion Ringmaster. Ringmaster, who is due in New Zealand in August, is by Colorado (2000 Guineas and third in Derby) from Vervelie, by Buchan—Verve, by Velocity—Valve, by Velasquez from Gas, by Ayrshire—Hluminata. He thus belongs to one of the prominent branches of the No. 1 family and, being only a five-year-old, is in the prime of his vitality.

Hawke's Bay Hunt. Acceptances for the Hawke’s Bay Hunt Club’s annual meeting, to bo kola on Saturday, will close with the secretary, Mr. 11. S. Moss. Box 13, Hastings, tonight at 8 o'clock.
