ROADSIDE PLANTING

On the initiative of Eastbourne a movement has been set .in train for a scheme of roadside planting along the route of the marine drive round Wellington Harbour from the city to that eastern suburb. At a meeting held on Wednesday it was mentioned that the attitude of property-owners who would be asked to dedicate roadside strips, for planting might prove to be an obstacle. There should be no difficulty there. People arc beginning to realise the aesthetic possibilities of well thought-out planting schemes, and it would be surprising indeed if serious opposition were offered to the adornment of this most attractive marine highway with suitable trees. The section of road between the city and Petotie lends itself to extensive tree-planting, which would relieve what at present is a very dull landscape. Care would have to be taken, of course, that any planting scheme adopted should have due regard to traffic visibility. The Petone Borough Council is systematically improving the aspect of its waterfront, but bevond its "boundary there is ample scope for planting along the roadside to Eastbourne. This awakening of public interest in the possibilities of beautifying the surroundings of our beautiful harbour is a welcome sign, and should be encouraged in every possible way.
