NURSES’ SALARIES

Opposition to Increase Defeated HOSPITAL BOARD DECISION Opposition to increases averaging about £2l a year in the salaries of eleven nurses in various responsible positions was voiced at last night’s meeting of the Wellington Hospital Board by Mr. A. AV. Croskery. He said notice of motion had been given to examine the salary position of the whole of the employees, and no one section should be treated first. A motion supporting his attitude was lost. “I think it is foolish to pick out a few who are thought to be privileged and giv? them an increase in salary before the whole of the board. members are .considered,” said Mr. Croskery. “AVe should first examine the position of them all at the same time. I don’t object to the increases themselves. A comprehensive report already has been asked for on wages and working conditions.” ■ *

The position of these sisters had been a burning question in the hospital since the wages of all employees were revised a year ago, said Mr. J. Glover. Decision •was made to bring down a report tn connection with the sisters: ‘‘We must have smooth working for the hospital; we can’t wait, but must deal, with it now,” he said.

The sisters were all heads of departments, remarked Mr. C. A. L. Treadwell.

The chairman, Mr. F. Castle, said it was in tsjie Interests of the board to keep the sisters as long as possible ,and it was more difficult to do that unless there were increases in salaries. It was.a position that arose at the present moment.
