TRAMPING ACTIVITY

Annual Meeting ol Hutt Valley Club The twelfth annual meeting of the Hutt Valley Tramping Club was attended by a lar-e and enthusiastic gathering ol members last night._ The president bit. Alexander Roberts, m moving tion of the annual report, said the club still maintained its original record, that of’being a happy Tb * shown great progress. U ben ‘t there was a membership of 20, and at one time it looked as though the infant was not going to survive. But .away came the club after a couple of years, and it hau never looked back, there being a membership at present of 150. The club was to be congratulated on its strength of membership and strength of activity. When the contents of the report were noted he was very proud indeed to be associated with such a live and active organisation. Sir Alexander referred to the extra facilities for the trampers which the club had provided recently, and said there was no sport that excelled tramping. It was a wonderful sport and created wonderful fellowship. At present the club had an accumulated fund of more than £6O; in the old days it was more like 60 pence, and he congratulated it on the position it found itself in at the present time. In seconding the adoption of the report, Mr. W. H. Wilson said the membership augured well for the future. He remarked that in the future when New Zealand’s tourist potentialities were fully appreciated tramping was going to play a large part in the social life of the community. Mr. Wilson referred to the fine achievements by the clou’s members, and appealed to them to regard themselves as forestry rangers and protect the native flora.

The report was adopted without further discussion. More modesty in dress, particularly in relation to women’s “shorts,” was advocated by Miss H. G. Niven, who criticised the brevity and colour of some of them. Satisfaction was expressed at the club’s magazine, and it was hoped there would be further issues. A member pointed out that that could only be done if everyone co-operated in writing articles and selling the magazine. Votes of thanks were extended to the former secretary. Mr. G. E. Mabin. the former treasurer, Mr. Tan Powell, the auditor, Mr. XV. A. Scott, and the chair. The election of officers resulted as follows: —President, Sir Alexander Roberts; vice-presidents, Miss H. G.
