THE SOCIAL ROUND

More Than 100 Tables of Bridge That bridge is the surest way to congenial entertainment on bleak, wintry nights, was proved by the hundreds of players who filled St. Francis Hall, Wellington, last evening, for a most successful bridge party arranged to assist the funds of the Wellington Free Kindergarten Association, lhere were more than a hundred tables, and the stage and upstairs lounge had been utilised as well as the main hail. There were plenty of radiators to assure warmth and comfort, the result being that no one complained of being cold. The lounge, with its rather quieter atmosphere, was reserved for the contract players, evidently to give them better opportunities for deep concentration. The delicious home-made supper, which had been provided by the council and executive of the association, was set in buffet fashion in the supperroom downstairs, with crystal vases of spring flowers to brighten the tables. Mrs. J. A. Doctor and Mrs. H. D. Vickery stood in the vestibule to welcome the players as they arrived. Among those who had arranged tables were: Mrs. Turnbull, Mrs. Vickery, Mrs. Widdop, Mrs. L. C. Feilding Golf Ball

Dancers from a wide area attended the annual Feilding golf ball, which achieved an outstanding measure of success. The Drill Hall was tastefully decorated for the function, and on the night of the ball it presented a acene of animated gaiety. The walls of the hall were covered with red bunting' and draped with white and blue. Coloured lights radiated from a large red, white anti blue disc in the centre of the ceiling to all four corners, from which points large balloon-shaped lanterns were suspended. A refreshing atmosphere was lent to the whole surroundings' by clumps of greenery. The stage, set out with a thick carpet, easy chairs and heaters, made a cosy lounge. Decorations in the supper room were equally effective, the tables being artistically arranged with bowls of shaded pink camellias and black berries'. The savoury supper was provided by club members, and Misses Ruth Swainsou and Helen Crpnfoot undertook the decorations. Music for tlie dancing was supplied by an excellent orchestra, and extras were played by Miss M. Armour and Mi;. M. I’iraui.

Much credit for the success of the function is due to the work of the secretary, Mrs. John Graham, who worked hard to see that all arrangements were completed for the event. The committee comprised Mesdames L. Gorton, C. V. Newton Broad, K. G. Salmond, J. Graham, K. M. Little, E. Fair, C. 11. Tait, L. Hall. G. Darragh. Misses .1. Crabbe, I’. Goodbehere, E. Redwood, M Bartholomew, M. Johnston. J. Campbell, R. Swainson, R. Conway, N. Jefferies, T. Carthew, and D. Sargisou.

Queen Carnival Party

A very pleasant afternoon was spent at. Ngni'o when Mrs. H. D. Cummings organised a party for the queen carnival in aid of the Church of Eng'aud, about 60 women being present. Mrs. Cummings introduced Miss M. Butler, a well-known traveller, who gave a most Interesting travelogue on a trip on the Danube, relating her experiences and impressions. Miss A. Dick gave two enjoyable elocutionary items, and Mrs. A. R. Christian ably conducted a community sing. The artists were presented with shoulder sprays of daphne, violets, and lueulin. A competition and a delightful home-made afternoon tea concluded a well-organised party.
